Forays and Field Trips
Forays are group outings where mushrooms are identified by invited professionals or by a committee of experienced amateurs. SIMA adds species only during forays where professionals are present to lead, or if the mushrooms are identified by committee. This identification may be accomplished by morphological, biochemical and microscopic examination as well as consultation with current literature. Whether or not a species has a high probability of occurring in the area is also taken into account.
Typically, at least one foray each in spring and fall is held over 3-4 days with multiple opportunities for collecting and identifying species from edible to toxic and everything in between. Other forays and field trips are arranged as weather and interest permits.
2020 Foray Dates
May 22-24 at Quaker Hill Lodge in McCall, Idaho cancelled
Because this event was cancelled due to regulations around gathering sizes, Quaker Hill credited our 2020 deposit toward next spring’s foray. Pandemic-permitting, it will be held in the same location next year, May 28-30, 2021 (Memorial Day weekend).
Identification Class Student Foray
Our identification class was rescheduled from April to July 21-23 and held from 6-8pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. A foray for students in the Smith’s Ferry area followed on Saturday.
Olive Lake Mini Campout Foray
August 6-8 near Olive Lake, Oregon.
October 1-4 at Quaker Hill Lakeside Lodge in McCall, Idaho. cancelled
The SIMA Board met August 24th and made the decision to cancel this foray due in part to the inability to adequately distance in the smaller Lakeside location. Quaker Hill is holding a similar weekend date in 2021 for us. We are considering holding an informal foray October 2-3 (Friday to Saturday) in McCall. Attendees will collect species on their own and then meet at a designated time in an open-air park for identification and discussion. Email IdahoMushroomClub at gmail.com if you are interested in being notified about this foray.
